International Trade and Small Business Seminar
OCTOBER 23-30, 2011, SUZDAL
There are no those words which could reflect my impressions about this seminar. At the seminar we learned not only how to build business, but also analyzed various aspects of business: financial, marketing, and also prepared recommendations about business improvement. Uniqueness of this program consists that after a theoretical course, we had business practice in hotel, bank and even at the farm. For my work I have received knowledge which will help me at budget planning, the analysis of the data and in business dialogues with new clients and partners of bank “IVANOVO”.
Kirill Krupnov, Specialist in Marketing and Advertising of Bank “IVANOVO”
I want to say great thank you to Dr.Quigley for his informative seminars. The knowledge received on them helped me to understand better how business in Russia and USA is organized, to understand processes, occurring in the world economy today. His advices have practical value also in management of my personal finance.
Kate Serdukova, Economist of Bank “IVANOVO” (department of crediting of corporate clients)
ITSBI seminars conducted by Dr. Michael Quigley are extremely popular among the students of Moscow Academy of Labor & Social Relations. ITSBI & the Academy cooperation started in 2010. The program of seminars comprises a variety of important areas. To give you the idea of the program we’ll just name some of them:
- New Methods of profound learning
- System Theory and Continuous Improvement
- Optimization of business/education capability
- Developing a new or existing business
- Critical processes of the business
- Making a business profitable
Every autumn and spring a week-long seminars bring together Russian students from various universities. They get away from the noise of mega polices and plunge into unique atmosphere of the seminars which are traditionally held in an ancient Russian town of Suzdal. Everything contributes to the success of the program. The Institute holds its seminars at the Suzdal Inn Conference Center where, in a historical and peaceful environment, new learning can be developed. By the end of the week they all become members of a very special team. They become even more focused on their plans for future. The participants learn how to keep the end or desired results in sight from the start. They improve communication skills and linguistic competence. No more language barriers for them! They often find it difficult to switch from English back to Russian when they come home.
Profound learning is achieved through integration of theory and action in seminar format. Holistic as well as analytical thinking is developed. The participants’ results are impressive. Their motivation to excel has brought about good results in academic studies as well as in starting up their own business projects. But the most important thing is that they all change their view on competition in business. Because competitionis not between us, it is within each of us.

Assistant Professor,
ITSBI expert teacher
Seminar gave me unbelievable impressions. First in my life I was communicating with the native speaker, and it was so great! Also I got a lot of new friends. Seminar gave me new knowledge; Dr. Quigley shared his experience and his American view on business. Actually I don’t think that his point of view considering business is good for Russian model of business, not sure for 100%. But all of this is terribly interesting and of course it’s always a pleasure to get new knowledge.
Anna Gorokhova, 3 course, Moscow Academy of Labor
I have many impressions. It was a fantastic week! All people involved – professor Dr. Quigley, Marina Mikhailovna, personnel in the hotel and other participants – are very interesting and kind people. This seminar gave me new knowledge and new acquaintances with brilliant people. I liked Dr. Quigley very much. He can explain difficult things in simple words; it was very interesting to work with him. I plan to visit spring seminar.
In future I’d like to have my own business, and it’s very important to make it profitable. So I hope to see Dr. Quigley again and also meet all those great guys whom I met.

I can’t find words to express my feelings to describe a week I spent at the seminar. Dr. Quigley is a bright person, kind and clever, and what is more important he can be funny. He can make even very boring lecture so interesting that the laziest student will wake up and start listening with desire J His seminar is very different comparing to what we have in our university. During the seminar every participant felt that he wants to know new things, study and explore. At least it happened to me. If I had a chance to come to Dr. Quigley’s seminar again I would gladly agree. One week with Dr. Quigley gave us the knowledge that we would never get in our university. During the seminar we learnt not only the base of starting own business but the way of doing it. Except the studies we had time to have some rest. Tours, barbeque, disco, night “Mafia” games – all this happened to us during the week in Suzdal.
But the most memorable thing during this week was communication with great people. Students from different cities of our country met together; all different but all the same! It is great that this seminar gave us an opportunity to get to know each other. I want to say great thank you to all organizers of the seminar!
Vasiliy Ulitin, 1 course, Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology
Dr. Quigley’s seminar is a rare opportunity to get real knowledge which you can apply in practice. The greatest advantage of this seminar is that it’s not kept in a form of boring and exhausting lectures but in a form of active communication which helps to understand the material. For students of economic faculties knowledge and experience which they get here will become priceless in everyday studies and in future career. Progressive methods of doing business, practice of business English, training of oratorical skills – this is just a small part of invaluable experience which you can get from this seminar, and besides you don’t have to pay a lot of money for internship abroad.
I want to say great thank you to organizers for the opportunity to take part in the seminar, “Suzdal Inn” Hotel for warmth and coziness, and of course Dr. Quigley for priceless knowledge, experience and interesting and sincere talks J
Aleksey Novoselskiy
It was so cool: language practice, interesting material. All studies were easy to understand, and besides you not only learn about business but can see it from different sides, you feel yourself a businessman. You understand that the most important thing is care of the top managers about friendly relationships among colleagues, cooperation of the employees, work motivation, etc. Yes, I’d love to start my own business J

On October 23-30, 2011 students and postgraduates of Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations took part in a seminar of American professor Dr. Michael Quigley in Suzdal.
Every year in March and October International Trade and Small Business Institute (USA) makes seminars for university students and high school students in ancient Russian city Suzdal. Students of Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations are the permanent participants of ITSBI program. Executive Director of the Institute is Dr. Michael Quigley. This year among the participants were students from regional branches of our Academy: particularly 4th course student Galina Voloshina from PR Department of Ural Social-Economic Institute (Chelyabinsk) and aspirant Shafikova Aigul from Bashkirskiy Institute of Social Technologies.
Galina Voloshina: “In Ural Social Economic Institute student life is very rich. We participate in many conferences, seminars and workshops, organize disputes in our club “Dialogos”, take part in an inter university project between 5 universities in Chelyabinsk. That’s why participation in Dr. Quigley’s seminar was very useful. We had a chance to speak English all the time (working language of the seminar is English). We got unique knowledge about small business. This program is unique because after theoretical course we had a chance to see real examples of profitable small businesses (hotel, bank and agro complex). At the end of the seminar we had presentations prepared by project groups. Students had to analyze different aspects of business, financial marketing and also make recommendations for business improvement. I’d like to thank the direction of our university – our rector, professor Evgeny Kozhokin and curator of this program in our Academy, assistant professor Liliya Kamneva. And I want to express special gratitude to Dr. Michael Quigley. I’m sure that the program will keep developing, and participation of our students from Academy branches will be permanent”.

International Trade and Small Business Seminar,
October 31 – November 05, 2010, SUZDAL
“BUILDING AN EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT BUSINESS”
I took part in the ITSBI seminar of Dr. Quigley in October 2010. At that time I started my career as a manager of tour company "Fun-Tour". The course of Dr. Quigley helped me to understand more clearly the main principles of modern business in general, and tour business in particular. Besides, Dr.Quigley not just gave us the theory, but also explained us how to realise these principles in practice to be successful and effecttive manager. It was really useful experience for me!

Seminars of Dr. Michael Quigley: “Learning what is Difficult with Ease”
On October 31 – November 05, 2010, Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations took part in annual seminar of Dr. Michael Quigley for high school and university students in beautiful ancient Russian city Suzdal. During the closing ceremony certificates for participants for presented by Major of Suzdal Olga Guseva.
Program of the seminar was very rich. During the whole week delegation of Academy students along with representatives of other universities had been working 8 hours a day. Studies included theory and practice. One of the necessary parts of the program was the interview with managers of successful companies. Students had a chance to know everything about work of the bank, farm, hotel and travel agency. At the end of the seminar students made group presentations with recommendations for quality improvement of these businesses.
“We don’t hesitate that the studies we’ve got learning the cycle Plan – Do – Study – Act will be helpful for us”, - Academy students say.
Corporate Coordinator of the seminars in Russia Marina Bolshakova said that active participation of Academy students had been “a unique breakthrough” for the ITSBI. It was very nice to know that. Academy delegation all itself and every student on his own took home Certificates of Achievements. Kirill Shkarbanenko (4th course, Global Economy) was mentioned as the most active participant of autumn seminar. Daria Senchenkova (4th course, Global Economy) got an invitation to work in one of the companies for which she was making a project.
During the seminar you could feel the atmosphere of cooperation and help. “We got to learn so many things in such a short time! It’s amazing”, - said Marina Plotnikova and Vladislav Ryzher (3rd course, Social and Economic Faculty). “All that we’ve already studied in our Academy suddenly got a new sense. Boring schemes from the books appeared to become live; they turned from formality to necessity”.
Euvgeny Skarednov, student of the 4th course, says that lectures inspired him to study management philosophy of Dr. Edward Deming one of the creators of “Japanese economic miracle”. Name of this distinguished American scientist of the XX century was mentioned many times during the seminar. Dr. Deming is the author of his own quality management theory where statistical methods are just the instruments, and the main thing is moral philosophy based on respect for every employee as a personality; involvement of all employees to the process of problems solving; making of psychological atmosphere with no fear, the atmosphere which helps to see potential of every person.

First of all this seminar was a great English practice for me. A student who studies foreign language needs to speak it fluently. Themes of the seminar were very interesting for me because I study at the faculty of Global Economy, Finance and Insurance. Establishing and developing business in Russia is one of the most actual themes in Russian business community. Thanks to Dr. Quigley I could see advantages and disadvantages of two systems: American and Russian. This experience is priceless for me and I hope to use it in my future career.
Valeria Surkova, Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations
Seminar with Dr. Quigley is an extraordinary event! You can’t compare it to anything else. When I decided to take part in the seminar I thought that it would be ordinary program where the teacher explains the material all the time, and participants just try to write everything down. Butitwas different! From the first moment I saw fire in Dr. Quigley’s eyes, and I told to myself: “No, it’s not one more boring seminar. Something will happen” and it happened. During this week I turned into another person. I learnt a lot of new things and started thinking about aspects I’ve never noticed before. It wasn’t just studying. It was a new way of thinking, new look to common things. Dr. Quigley helps to see business from another point of view than we can read in books about management or hear during MBA programs. It’s a complex scientific view on business from the point of management, finance, statistical method, safe production and simple peoples’ relationships. Dr. Quigley doesn’t just tell us about principles of management, he gives us new way of thinking which helps to become successful manager. Moreover Dr. Quigley inspires to open our talents – this is the base of his education method. He tells interesting and easy about difficult, gives concrete examples of large corporations like Toyota and Volvo. During the seminar every participant is involved to the process through different experiments and work in group projects. And of course it’s not boring! I’m very thankful to him for all knowledge, skills and inspiration I’ve got during the seminar. Thank you, Dr. Quigley, for opening new horizons for me!
Evgeny Skarednov, Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations
Thank you so much! It was a great pleasure of being there in “Suzdal Inn”. I liked it so much. The food was amazing! Everyday we had something new. Thank you for a delicious meal. The hotel is so cozy, and the most important thing that there is a friendly atmosphere. Actually, I was looking forward to going there because I always wanted to go somewhere to study. And of course I would like to come there again and again to relax or to study. And I am telling my friends how great there was. I have learned a lot of important information while I was there. Thank you so much. Hope to see and hear you soon! Thank you!
Svetlana Babushkina, Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations
I’d like to thank everyone who gave me a chance to combine rest and studies in “Suzdal Inn” Hotel. This hotel is small and cozy, personnel is friendly and hospitable, you even become to feel ashamed of such attention but later you feel like at home and don’t want to go anywhere else.
Seminar with Dr. Quigley was very interesting. Dr. Quigley himself is a great teacher who really wants to give his knowledge to young generation. I want to cooperate with you and come to Suzdal again.
